Proverbs 5: Drink from your own well

Read Proverbs 5:1-23 before you meet.

In a few lines

One Hebrew verb, shagah, runs through the chapter's close: "Be captivated always with her love" (5:19), "why should you, my son, be captivated with an adulteress?" (5:20), and "he will go astray" (5:23). And she "gives no thought to" the way of life (5:6), while the LORD "examines" every path (5:21): in Hebrew, one verb.

The verse to carry

“For the ways of man are before the LORD’s eyes. He examines all his paths.”

Proverbs 5:21

To talk about

  1. 1. At his latter end the man says, "I haven’t obeyed the voice of my teachers" (5:13). Whose wise voice have you been glad you listened to, and what helped you listen?

  2. 2. "Remove your way far from her. Don’t come near the door of her house" (5:8). The father's advice is about distance, long before the door. Where in ordinary life does keeping your distance make it easier to do what is right?

  3. 3. "For the ways of man are before the LORD’s eyes. He examines all his paths" (5:21). Does that feel more like a comfort or a weight to you this week? Why?
