Proverbs 25: A word fitly spoken
Read Proverbs 25:1-28 before you meet.
In a few lines
The chapter's first sayings come back near its end: "the glory of God" (25:2) and "the hearts of kings are unsearchable" (25:3) return in Hebrew in "nor is it honorable to seek one’s own honor" (25:27), with kavod and cheqer. And the saying Paul gives in Romans 12:20, "If your enemy is hungry", is Proverbs 25:21.
The verse to carry
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.”
Proverbs 25:11
To talk about
1. "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver" (25:11). Think of a word someone spoke to you at the right time. What made it fit?
2. "for it is better that it be said to you, “Come up here,” than that you should be put lower" (25:7). Why can it be hard to leave the higher place for someone else to give?
3. "If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat" (25:21). What makes doing good to someone who has set himself against you hard, and what might help?
