Proverbs 23: Give me your heart

Read Proverbs 23:1-35 before you meet.

In a few lines

One Hebrew word stands behind "surely there is a future hope" (23:18), said to the one who fears the LORD, and "In the end, it bites like a snake" (23:32), said of wine. And in 23:5 one verb is used for setting your eyes on "that which is not" and for what "sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky".

The verse to carry

“My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.”

Proverbs 23:26

To talk about

  1. 1. "Why do you set your eyes on that which is not?" (23:5). Why do you think things that don't last can still pull so hard at our eyes?

  2. 2. "Don’t let your heart envy sinners, but rather fear the LORD all day long" (23:17). What can make it tempting to envy sinners, and what do 23:17-18 set against it?

  3. 3. "Buy the truth, and don’t sell it" (23:23). What can it cost to hold on to the truth, and what might tempt someone to let it go?
