Proverbs 22: Train up a child

Read Proverbs 22:1-29 before you meet.

In a few lines

The new part at 22:17 opens with "the words of the wise", the very Hebrew words the book named at its start (1:6), and its teaching is for one thing: "so that your trust may be in the LORD" (22:19). And the rich and the poor share one Maker (22:2), who will "plead their case" (22:23).

The verse to carry

“A good name is more desirable than great riches, and loving favor is better than silver and gold.”

Proverbs 22:1

To talk about

  1. 1. "A good name is more desirable than great riches" (22:1). What do you think gives someone a good name, and why might it be worth more than riches?

  2. 2. "Don’t befriend a hot-tempered man" (22:24), "lest you learn his ways" (22:25). How have the people you spend time with shaped your ways, for good or ill?

  3. 3. "Turn your ear, and listen to the words of the wise. Apply your heart to my teaching" (22:17), "so that your trust may be in the LORD" (22:19). What helps a good word go from your ears to your heart?
