Proverbs 13: A wise son listens
Read Proverbs 13:1-25 before you meet.
In a few lines
The scoffer "doesn’t listen to rebuke" (13:1) and the poor "hear no threats" (13:8): in Hebrew the same three words. And "The teaching of the wise is a spring of life, to turn from the snares of death" (13:14) comes back in the next chapter, of the fear of the LORD, with the same five Hebrew words (Proverbs 14:27).
The verse to carry
“One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.”
Proverbs 13:20
To talk about
1. "One who walks with wise men grows wise" (13:20). Who has helped you grow wiser just by spending time with them, and what did you pick up from them?
2. "He who guards his mouth guards his soul" (13:3). When has holding back a word, or choosing it carefully, spared you or someone else trouble?
3. "Hope deferred makes the heart sick" (13:12). What helps you keep going while something you hope for is slow in coming?
