Proverbs 1: The beginning of knowledge

Read Proverbs 1:1-33 before you meet.

In a few lines

The book's first line comes back inside Wisdom's speech: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" (1:7), and those who refused her "hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of the LORD" (1:29). And the men who say "Let’s lie in wait for blood" (1:11) "lay in wait for their own blood" (1:18), with the same Hebrew verbs.

The verse to carry

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.”

Proverbs 1:7

To talk about

  1. 1. The book is for the simple and the young, and also "that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning" (1:5). Where would you most like to keep growing in wisdom right now?

  2. 2. The sinners' offer begins "Come with us" (1:11) and ends "We’ll all have one purse" (1:14). Why do you think the pull to belong can be so strong, even toward something wrong?

  3. 3. Wisdom calls them to "Turn at my reproof" (1:23). What makes correction hard to receive, and what has helped you receive it?
