Numbers 8: Waved before the LORD

Read Numbers 8 before you meet.

In a few lines

Numbers 8 is the only place in the Hebrew Bible where the wave offering is people: the children of Israel laid their hands on the Levites (8:10), and Aaron waved them before the LORD (8:11, 8:21). The Levites were cleansed, not anointed (8:7), and the lamp stand's seven lamps were set to shine in front of it (8:2).

The verse to carry

“Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine.”

Numbers 8:14

To talk about

  1. 1. The lamps were set to give light "in front of the lamp stand" (8:2). Who is in front of you this week, and what would it look like for your light to fall on them?

  2. 2. The children of Israel laid their hands on the Levites (8:10), who were offered "on the behalf of the children of Israel" (8:11). Who serves on your behalf, and how could you stand with them?

  3. 3. At fifty the Levites stopped the heavy work but went on assisting their brothers (8:25-26). How has the way you serve changed with the seasons of your life, and what might it look like next?
