Numbers 4: Covered, then carried
Read Numbers 4 before you meet.
In a few lines
The Kohathites carried the most holy things but were not to touch them or even see them: Aaron and his sons covered each piece first, and only the ark went with its blue cloth on the outside (4:5-15, 4:20). And Merari's clan, who carried the boards and sockets, had the most men from thirty to fifty: 3,200 of the 8,580 (4:44, 4:48).
The verse to carry
“According to the commandment of the LORD they were counted by Moses, everyone according to his service and according to his burden. Thus they were counted by him, as the LORD commanded Moses.”
Numbers 4:49
To talk about
1. Every man was counted "according to his service and according to his burden" (4:49). What are you carrying right now, for God or for other people, and does it feel like yours to carry?
2. The LORD gave these instructions so the Kohathites "may live, and not die" (4:19). When has a limit God set turned out to be for your good?
3. Merari's clan carried boards, bars and sockets, and the instruments of their load were appointed to them "by name" (4:32). Whose unseen work keeps your group or church going, and how could you thank them this week?
