Numbers 30: He shall not break his word
Read Numbers 30:1-16 before you meet.
In a few lines
A vow was words that became a bond: "He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth" (30:2). For a daughter or a wife, the day her father or husband heard decided it, and silence said yes (30:14); if he forbade it, "The LORD will forgive her" (30:5). And Jesus took up the law of vows: "perform to the Lord your vows" (Matthew 5:33).
The verse to carry
“When a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.”
Numbers 30:2
To talk about
1. "He shall not break his word" (30:2). Is there a promise you've made, to God or to someone else, that you've let slip? What would keeping it look like this week?
2. "He has established them, because he said nothing to her in the day that he heard them" (30:14). Where might your silence be saying yes to something?
3. Ecclesiastes says, "Don’t allow your mouth to lead you into sin" (Ecclesiastes 5:6). How do you weigh a promise before you make it, rather than after?
