Numbers 29: Seventy bulls, then one
Read Numbers 29:1-40 before you meet.
In a few lines
Numbers 29 says what went on the altar on each holy day of the seventh month. At the feast the bulls count down, thirteen, twelve, eleven, to seven: 70 in seven days, though Numbers never adds them up. Then the eighth day goes back to "one bull" (29:36). And all of it came "in addition to your vows and your free will offerings" (29:39).
The verse to carry
“‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no regular work. You shall keep a feast to the LORD seven days.”
Numbers 29:12
To talk about
1. Every day of the feast had its offerings "according to their number" (29:18), set in advance. What do you do with God on a set rhythm, and what keeps it from becoming just a number?
2. The same month held a day to "afflict your souls" (29:7) and "a feast to the LORD seven days" (29:12). Where does your life with God need a day of humbling, and where does it need a feast?
3. All the fixed offerings came "in addition to your vows and your free will offerings" (29:39). What would it look like for you to give God something freely this week, beyond what's expected?
