Numbers 13: Well able

Read Numbers 13 before you meet.

In a few lines

The spies' report began, "Surely it flows with milk and honey" (13:27). What followed turned on one Hebrew verb: Caleb said it twice, "we are well able", and the others said it with a "not" (13:30-31). And the three sons of Anak they saw at Hebron (13:22) are the three Caleb drove out years later (Joshua 15:14).

The verse to carry

“Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, “Let’s go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it!””

Numbers 13:30

To talk about

  1. 1. Caleb and the other spies saw the same land and the same people (13:27-31), and came back with opposite answers. When have you and someone else looked at the same facts and come to different conclusions? What made the difference?

  2. 2. "We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight" (13:33). How does the way you see yourself shape what you think others see, and what you think you can do?

  3. 3. Caleb "stilled the people before Moses" (13:30) and spoke up, though the men who went with him disagreed (13:31). What would it take for you to speak up like that in your family, church or work?
