Numbers 1: Counted by name
Read Numbers 1 before you meet.
In a few lines
The 603,550 are the men from twenty years old and upward, without the Levites (1:46-47). The Levites weren't counted but appointed, and in Hebrew both are the same verb (1:49-50). And Nahshon, the man who stood for Judah (1:7), is in Matthew's list of Jesus' ancestors (Matthew 1:4).
The verse to carry
“Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they did.”
Numbers 1:54
To talk about
1. Every man was counted "according to the number of the names, one by one" (1:20). What difference does it make to you to be known by name, by God and by the people around you?
2. The Levites weren't counted with the others; their part was to carry, set up and guard the tabernacle (1:49-53). Where is your part different from the people around you, and how do you feel about that?
3. "According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they did" (1:54). What would it look like for your group to do together something you already know God has asked?
