Nehemiah 9: A God ready to pardon
Read Nehemiah 9:1-38 before you meet.
In a few lines
Nehemiah 9 tells Israel's whole story to God, from "You have made heaven" (9:6) to "we are servants today" (9:36), and again and again the people's turning away is met by God's mercy: "a God ready to pardon… and didn’t forsake them" (9:17). It ends with "a sure covenant" (9:38): in Hebrew not berit, but amanah.
The verse to carry
“Nevertheless in your manifold mercies you didn’t make a full end of them, nor forsake them; for you are a gracious and merciful God.”
Nehemiah 9:31
To talk about
1. The prayer tells the whole story and keeps coming back to God who "didn’t forsake them" (9:17, 9:19). Looking back over your own story, where can you say that of God?
2. "But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger" (9:17). Which of these is hardest for you to believe about God when you've done wrong, and why?
3. "Yet for all this, we make a sure covenant, and write it" (9:38). What is one thing your group would want to put in writing together, and what would help you keep it?
