Nehemiah 5: Against their brothers
Read Nehemiah 5:1-19 before you meet.
In a few lines
The great cry of Nehemiah 5 wasn't against the enemies outside the wall but "against their brothers the Jews" (5:1). Nehemiah asked the nobles and rulers to give back what they held (5:11), and as governor he didn’t demand "the governor’s pay" himself, "because the bondage was heavy on this people" (5:18).
The verse to carry
“Remember me, my God, for all the good that I have done for this people.”
Nehemiah 5:19
To talk about
1. The cry of Nehemiah 5 came from inside the city, "against their brothers" (5:1). Why do you think trouble among our own people can be harder to face than trouble from outside?
2. Nehemiah was "very angry" (5:6), and then "consulted with myself" (5:7) before he spoke. What helps you stop and think before you act when you're angry about something wrong?
3. Nehemiah didn't take what he could have taken, "because the bondage was heavy on this people" (5:18). Where could setting aside something that's rightly yours make someone else's load lighter this week?
