Nehemiah 3: Next to him
Read Nehemiah 3:1-32 before you meet.
In a few lines
Nehemiah 3 isn't a dull list: it walks the wall from the sheep gate round to the sheep gate, priests, goldsmiths, a perfumer, district rulers and Shallum's daughters side by side, and under almost every "made repairs" is chazaq, "be strong", 35 times in the chapter; one line of holding back, and Nehemiah himself isn't named once.
The verse to carry
“Above the horse gate, the priests made repairs, everyone across from his own house.”
Nehemiah 3:28
To talk about
1. Priests, goldsmiths, a perfumer, rulers of districts, and Shallum with his daughters all worked on one wall (3:1, 3:8, 3:12). What shared work are you part of right now, and what is your stretch of it?
2. "Their nobles didn’t put their necks to the Lord’s work" (3:5), yet the Tekoites came back for another portion (3:27). When people around you hold back, what keeps you going, and what makes you want to stop?
3. Several builders repaired "across from his own house" (3:28-29). Why might it matter to start with what is right in front of you? Where is that for you this week?
