Matthew 9: According to your faith
Read Matthew 9:1-38 before you meet.
In a few lines
In Matthew 9 Jesus says "cheer up" twice: "Son" to a paralyzed man (9:2) and "Daughter" to a woman (9:22). He says "Follow me" to Matthew, who "got up and followed him" (9:9), and a few verses later "Jesus got up and followed" a ruler (9:19). And of the three tellings of the meal, only Matthew's has "I desire mercy, and not sacrifice" (9:13).
The verse to carry
“But you go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Matthew 9:13
To talk about
1. Jesus said to Matthew, "Follow me", and "He got up and followed him" (9:9). What is one thing Jesus might be calling you to get up from this week?
2. "But you go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’" (9:13). Where could you show mercy this week, and what makes it hard?
3. Jesus "was moved with compassion" for the multitudes, "like sheep without a shepherd" (9:36), and told his disciples to pray (9:38). Who could your group pray for this week?
