Matthew 8: Just say the word

Read Matthew 8:1-34 before you meet.

In a few lines

The only time Matthew says Jesus marveled (8:10) is when he heard a centurion who told him, "Just say the word" (8:8); and when evening came Jesus "cast out the spirits with a word" (8:16), the same Greek word. And Matthew's first "Son of Man" is in Jesus's own words: "the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head" (8:20).

The verse to carry

“The centurion answered, “Lord, I’m not worthy for you to come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.”

Matthew 8:8

To talk about

  1. 1. The centurion said, "Just say the word, and my servant will be healed" (8:8). Where are you being asked to trust Jesus's word right now, before you can see how things will turn out?

  2. 2. "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go" (8:19). What does following Jesus look like for you this week, and what makes it hard?

  3. 3. In the storm the disciples woke him, saying, "Save us, Lord! We are dying!" (8:25). When fear rises in you, what helps you turn to Jesus?
