Matthew 22: A wedding feast for his son

Read Matthew 22:1-46 before you meet.

In a few lines

In Matthew, Jesus tells the Sadducees that the words "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob" were "spoken to you by God" (22:31-32). Asked for the greatest commandment, he gives two, and says, "The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments" (22:40).

The verse to carry

“Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’”

Matthew 22:37

To talk about

  1. 1. Each question in 22:15-40 began with "Teacher" (22:16, 22:24, 22:36), though the Pharisees took counsel how they might "entrap him" (22:15), and the lawyer asked "testing him" (22:35). What question would you honestly bring to Jesus, and what would you hope to learn?

  2. 2. Jesus said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind" (22:37). What does loving God with your mind look like for you?

  3. 3. "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (22:39). Who is one person near you this week whom you could love as yourself, and what would it take?
