Matthew 20: The last will be first
Read Matthew 20:1-34 before you meet.
In a few lines
The parable of the vineyard is held between two sayings, "many will be last who are first" (19:30) and "So the last will be first" (20:16), and inside it the pay goes out "beginning from the last to the first" (20:8). Seven of the ten times Matthew's Greek has the word for last are in these few verses.
The verse to carry
“even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:28
To talk about
1. Those hired first said, "you have made them equal to us" (20:12), and the master answered, "Friend, I am doing you no wrong" (20:13). What do you notice in the way he answers them?
2. "whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant" (20:26). Who around you is great in that way, and what have you learned from them?
3. The two men said, "Lord, that our eyes may be opened" (20:33). What would you ask Jesus to open your eyes to this week?
