Matthew 17: Get up, and don’t be afraid
Read Matthew 17:1-27 before you meet.
In a few lines
Of the Gospels, only Matthew tells that Jesus "came and touched them and said, “Get up, and don’t be afraid.”" (17:7). In the Greek the voice on the mountain begins with the very sentence of 3:17, then adds "Listen to him" (17:5). And the chapter ends with Jesus's words about the coin, never telling that it was found (17:27).
The verse to carry
“Jesus came and touched them and said, “Get up, and don’t be afraid.””
Matthew 17:7
To talk about
1. When the voice came, the disciples "fell on their faces, and were very afraid" (17:6), and Jesus "came and touched them and said, “Get up, and don’t be afraid.”" (17:7). Where do you need to hear "Get up" this week?
2. "Listen to him" (17:5). What is one thing Jesus says that you want to listen to more closely right now?
3. Jesus said, "Therefore the children are exempt" (17:26), and then, "But, lest we cause them to stumble" (17:27), and sent Peter for the coin. What stands out to you in how Jesus answered the question about the didrachma?
