Matthew 15: Great is your faith

Read Matthew 15:1-39 before you meet.

In a few lines

In Matthew 15, Jesus answers "Why do your disciples disobey" with "Why do you also disobey" (15:2-3), and one Greek verb runs through his answer: honor your father and mother (15:4), and honor with the lips (15:8). And "Be it done to you" and "was healed" (15:28) are, in the Greek, the words of the centurion's healing (8:13).

The verse to carry

“But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man.”

Matthew 15:18

To talk about

  1. 1. "These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me" (15:8). What helps you keep your heart near to God, and not only your words?

  2. 2. Jesus said, "You have made the commandment of God void because of your tradition" (15:6). How can a reason that sounds good keep us from doing what God has plainly said?

  3. 3. "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have continued with me now three days and have nothing to eat" (15:32). Who around you is running on empty right now, and what is one way you could help this week?
