Matthew 13: Treasure hidden in the field

Read Matthew 13:1-58 before you meet.

In a few lines

In Matthew's telling of the farmer's parable, the one sown by the roadside "doesn’t understand" the word (13:19), and the one sown on the good ground "understands it" (13:23). And when the parables are over, Jesus asks, "Have you understood all these things?" (13:51).

The verse to carry

“But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.”

Matthew 13:16

To talk about

  1. 1. In Jesus's explanation, the one sown on the good ground "hears the word and understands it" (13:23). What has helped you understand a part of the Bible that once made no sense to you?

  2. 2. The man who found the treasure "sells all that he has" (13:44), and the merchant "sold all that he had" (13:46). Jesus doesn't explain either parable. What stands out to you in the two short stories as he tells them?

  3. 3. In his own country they asked, "Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?" (13:55), and "They were offended by him" (13:57). What do their questions show they knew about him? Has it ever been hard for you to listen to someone you know well?
