Mark 16: He has risen!

Read Mark 16:1-20 before you meet.

In a few lines

At the tomb the young man sends the women to the very place Mary Magdalene had seen him laid (15:47): "See the place where they laid him!" (16:6). And the message names one disciple: "tell his disciples and Peter" (16:7), the Peter who had remembered Jesus's words and wept (14:72). Jesus had said it on the last night: "after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee" (14:28).

The verse to carry

“He said to them, “Don’t be amazed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him!”

Mark 16:6

To talk about

  1. 1. The women set out before they knew how the stone would be moved: "Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?" (16:3). Where are you waiting to know how something will work out before you take the first step?

  2. 2. The message was for "his disciples and Peter" (16:7), and the last time Mark told of Peter, he had denied Jesus and wept (14:72). What does it mean to you that Peter is named?

  3. 3. The women were told, "go, tell" (16:7), and Mark says, "They said nothing to anyone; for they were afraid" (16:8). What makes it hard for you to speak about Jesus, and what helps?
