Mark 12: Not far from God’s Kingdom

Read Mark 12:1-44 before you meet.

In a few lines

When Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, quoted Moses to him, Jesus answered from Moses too: "I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob", and "He is not the God of the dead, but of the living" (12:26-27). And asked for the greatest commandment, he gave two: love God with everything, and your neighbor as yourself (12:29-31).

The verse to carry

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.”

Mark 12:30

To talk about

  1. 1. Mark says some of the questions in this chapter were asked "that they might trap him" (12:13), and one came from a scribe who saw "that he had answered them well" (12:28). What is the difference between asking a question to learn and asking one to win?

  2. 2. Jesus said to love God "with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength" (12:30). Which of the four do you find easiest to hold back from God, and why?

  3. 3. Jesus sat and watched how people gave, and called his disciples over to see what one poor widow had done (12:41-43). Who is someone easy to overlook who has taught you something about God?
