Luke 4: Today, in your hearing
Read Luke 4:1-44 before you meet.
In a few lines
In Luke 4 the reading in Nazareth has "the acceptable year of the Lord" (4:19), and then Jesus says "no prophet is acceptable in his hometown" (4:24): the same Greek word, the only two times Luke uses it. And at the end of the chapter he says, "For this reason I have been sent" (4:43), with the verb of the reading's "He has sent me" (4:18).
The verse to carry
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed, and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Luke 4:18-19
To talk about
1. Jesus answers the devil three times (4:4, 4:8, 4:12). Which of his three answers speaks most to you, and why?
2. In Nazareth "All testified about him and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth" (4:22), and by the end "They were all filled with wrath" (4:28). What does Jesus say in between (4:23-27), and what do you make of it?
3. "I must preach the good news of God’s Kingdom to the other cities also" (4:43). Who in your life has not yet heard the good news, and what is one way you could share it this week?
