Luke 23: Father, forgive them
Read Luke 23:1-56 before you meet.
In a few lines
In Luke, Jesus speaks three times from the cross, and the first and the last begin with Father: "Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing" (23:34), and "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" (23:46). Before that, Pilate says three times that he has found nothing in him (23:4, 23:14, 23:22).
The verse to carry
“Jesus said to him, “Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.””
Luke 23:43
To talk about
1. Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing" (23:34). Who is someone you find it hard to pray for, and what might you ask God for them?
2. One of the criminals said, "Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom" (23:42). If you could say one sentence to Jesus today, what would it be?
3. Joseph "had not consented to their counsel and deed" (23:51), and he "went to Pilate, and asked for Jesus’ body" (23:52). When is it hard for you not to go along with something others have agreed to?
