Luke 20: In the hearing of all the people

Read Luke 20:1-47 before you meet.

In a few lines

In Luke's telling of the vineyard, the farmers beat, shame and wound the three servants sent to them, and the one they kill is the son (20:10-15). And Luke keeps the people in view: Jesus was "teaching the people" (20:1), and he warned his disciples about the scribes "In the hearing of all the people" (20:45).

The verse to carry

“Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him.”

Luke 20:38

To talk about

  1. 1. Jesus answered their question with a question of his own (20:3-4). When has a question helped you see something more clearly than an answer would have?

  2. 2. The spies "pretended to be righteous" (20:20). What helps you be the same person before God that you are before other people?

  3. 3. Jesus warned against those who "love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts" (20:46). Where are you most tempted to want to be noticed?
