Luke 14: A great supper
Read Luke 14:1-35 before you meet.
In a few lines
At one table Jesus speaks in turn to the guests about where to sit (14:7-11), to his host about whom to invite (14:12-14), and to one guest with a story of a great supper (14:15-24), and one word, invited, runs through all three. Then, to the great multitudes going with him, he says three times, "can’t be my disciple" (14:26, 14:27, 14:33).
The verse to carry
“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
Luke 14:11
To talk about
1. Jesus says, "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted" (14:11). Where are you most tempted to reach for the best seat, and what would the lowest place look like there this week?
2. Jesus told his host, "when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind" (14:13). Who is someone you could make room for this week who can't do anything for you in return, and what would it take?
3. Jesus says, "Whoever doesn’t bear his own cross and come after me, can’t be my disciple" (14:27), and then asks who would build a tower without first sitting down to "count the cost" (14:28). What has coming after Jesus cost you so far, and what helps you keep going?
