Leviticus 4: And he will be forgiven

Read Leviticus 4 before you meet.

In a few lines

Leviticus 4 is where the book first says sin: an offering for sin done "unintentionally" (4:2), from the anointed priest to one of the common people. Its promise, "they shall be forgiven" (4:20), is the first time the WEB says "forgiven". And the bull whose blood went into the tent was burned outside the camp (4:12), which Hebrews sets beside Jesus (Hebrews 13:11-12).

The verse to carry

“He shall do this with the bull; as he did with the bull of the sin offering, so he shall do with this; and the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven.”

To talk about

  1. 1. Leviticus 4 makes a way back for wrongs people didn't know they had done until later (4:13-14). Is it easier for you to own a wrong you meant, or one you didn't mean? Why?

  2. 2. The anointed priest's sin could "bring guilt on the people" (4:3), and he brought the same offering as the whole congregation (4:3, 4:14). How do the wrongs of people who lead affect the people around them, and what does that ask of you where you lead?

  3. 3. Hebrews says Jesus "suffered outside of the gate", and then, "Let’s therefore go out to him outside of the camp, bearing his reproach" (Hebrews 13:12-13). What might going out to him look like for you this week?
