Leviticus 25: Proclaim liberty
Read Leviticus 25 before you meet.
In a few lines
Leviticus 25 gives the land a Sabbath every seventh year, and on the Day of Atonement sounds the trumpet for a fiftieth year to "proclaim liberty throughout the land" (25:9-10). Land goes back to its families, because "the land is mine" (25:23), and Israelites who sold themselves go free, because "they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt" (25:42).
The verse to carry
“‘The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; for you are strangers and live as foreigners with me.”
Leviticus 25:23
To talk about
1. The LORD asked Israel to let the land rest and promised, "I will command my blessing on you in the sixth year" (25:21). Where in your life is it hardest to stop and trust God to provide?
2. Four times the chapter gives a law for when "your brother" grows poor (25:25, 25:35, 25:39, 25:47), and each time someone near him is to act. Who near you might need you to "uphold him" (25:35) right now, and what would that look like?
3. Jesus read about "release to the captives" (Luke 4:18) and said, "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing" (Luke 4:21). What would release look like for you, or for someone you love?
