Leviticus 18: He shall live in them

Read Leviticus 18 before you meet.

In a few lines

Leviticus 18 sets Israel apart from Egypt, where they had lived, and Canaan, where they were going. At its heart is 18:5, "which if a man does, he shall live in them", words Paul quotes twice (Galatians 3:12; Romans 10:5), and in Galatians he goes on, "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law" (Galatians 3:13). And the land that vomited out the nations could vomit out Israel too (18:28).

The verse to carry

“You shall therefore keep my statutes and my ordinances, which if a man does, he shall live in them. I am the LORD.”

Leviticus 18:5

To talk about

  1. 1. The LORD said, "You shall not do as they do" (18:3), of the land Israel had come from and the land they were going to. What makes it hard to live differently from the people around you?

  2. 2. The chapter opens and closes with "I am the LORD your God" (18:2, 18:30). How does knowing whose you are shape the way you live?

  3. 3. Paul quotes 18:5 and then writes, "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law" (Galatians 3:13). How does that change the way you think about obeying God?
