Judges 7: The sword of the LORD and of Gideon

Read Judges 7:1-25 before you meet.

In a few lines

The LORD gave his own reason for cutting Gideon's army to three hundred: "lest Israel brag against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me’" (7:2). The three hundred held torches and trumpets, and the swords that struck that night were the ones the LORD "set… against his fellow" (7:20, 7:22).

The verse to carry

“The LORD said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel brag against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’”

Judges 7:2

To talk about

  1. 1. The LORD cut the army "lest Israel brag against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me’" (7:2). Where in your life are you most likely to say that, even quietly?

  2. 2. Gideon "worshiped" when he heard the dream, before a trumpet was blown (7:15). What would it look like for you to thank God for something before you see it happen?

  3. 3. The three hundred "each stood in his place around the camp" (7:21), and the LORD did the rest (7:22). What is your place to stand in this week, and what are you leaving to God?
