Judges 3: The LORD raised up a savior

Read Judges 3:1-31 before you meet.

In a few lines

Israel's first cry to the LORD in Judges comes in chapter 3, and both times they cry, "the LORD raised up a savior" (3:9, 3:15): Othniel, on whom the LORD's Spirit came, and Ehud, a left-handed man of Benjamin, the tribe whose name Strong's gives as "son of (the) right hand".

The verse to carry

“When the children of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a savior to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.”

Judges 3:9

To talk about

  1. 1. The nations were left "to know whether they would listen to the LORD’s commandments" (3:4). What in your ordinary week tests whether you are listening to God?

  2. 2. Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years, and Eglon eighteen, before the chapter says they cried to the LORD (3:8-9, 3:14-15). What keeps people, you included, from crying out for help sooner?

  3. 3. After Othniel died, Israel did evil again (3:11-12). What helps faith keep going when someone you leaned on is gone?
