Judges 20: Benjamin my brother

Read Judges 20:1-48 before you meet.

In a few lines

Israel asked the LORD three times, and only the third time, after weeping, fasting and offerings and the question "or shall I cease?", did he promise, "tomorrow I will deliver him into your hand" (20:26-28). And the book's first question, who will go up for us first (1:1), comes back here against Benjamin (20:18), "my brother" (20:23, 20:28).

The verse to carry

“Then all the children of Israel and all the people went up, and came to Bethel, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until evening; then they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.”

Judges 20:26

To talk about

  1. 1. Israel asked the LORD, went up as he said, and lost, twice (20:18-25). How do you keep coming back to God when doing what you believed was right doesn't turn out the way you expected?

  2. 2. "Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brothers" (20:13). What makes it hard to hear correction from people close to you, and what helps?

  3. 3. The third time, Israel came weeping and fasting and asked, "or shall I cease?" (20:28). What would it look like for you to bring God a question you are willing to hear "stop" to?
