Judges 2: Another generation

Read Judges 2:1-23 before you meet.

In a few lines

Judges 2 sets out the pattern the book's stories follow: evil in the LORD's sight, enemies, judges, and then back again, "more corruptly than their fathers" (2:19). No cry comes in it; the LORD raised up judges because "it grieved the LORD because of their groaning" (2:18). And it begins with a generation "who didn’t know the LORD, nor the work which he had done for Israel" (2:10).

The verse to carry

“After all that generation were gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who didn’t know the LORD, nor the work which he had done for Israel.”

Judges 2:10

To talk about

  1. 1. "Another generation arose after them who didn’t know the LORD, nor the work which he had done for Israel" (2:10). What has God done in your life that you want the people who come after you to know, and how could you tell them?

  2. 2. "When the judge was dead, they turned back" (2:19). Have you seen that pattern in your own walk with God, doing well while someone was beside you and slipping when they weren't? What helps you keep going?

  3. 3. "It grieved the LORD because of their groaning" (2:18), though they kept turning away (2:17). What does that show you about God, and how does it change the way you come to him when you've failed?
