Joshua 5: The reproach rolled away

Read Joshua 5:1-15 before you meet.

In a few lines

Gilgal is named for the LORD's own words, "I have rolled away" (5:9). The manna ceased after Israel had eaten of the produce of the land, with the verb of God's rest on the seventh day (5:12; Genesis 2:2). And by Jericho, Joshua heard almost word for word what Moses heard at the bush (5:15; Exodus 3:5).

The verse to carry

“The prince of the LORD’s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals, for the place on which you stand is holy.” Joshua did so.”

Joshua 5:15

To talk about

  1. 1. "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you" (5:9). Is there something from your past you still carry as a reproach? What would it mean to hear that God has rolled it away?

  2. 2. The manna ceased after Israel had eaten of the produce of the land (5:12). Has the way God provides for you changed from one season of your life to another? What did you learn from the change?

  3. 3. Joshua asked, "Are you for us, or for our enemies?" and heard, "No" (5:13-14). Then he asked, "What does my lord say to his servant?" (5:14). What changes when you ask Joshua's second question instead of his first?
