Joshua 22: A witness between us
Read Joshua 22:1-34 before you meet.
In a few lines
The eastern tribes kept their word and went home with a charge in Moses' own words: love, walk, keep, hold fast, serve. Their great altar by the Jordan nearly started a war, until Phinehas and ten princes went and asked. It was never for sacrifice: a copy of the LORD's altar, built so a river couldn't cut their children off from the LORD, a witness that the LORD is God.
The verse to carry
“Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Joshua 22:5
To talk about
1. The tribes heard about an altar that looked like betrayal, gathered for war, and then went to ask first (22:11-15). When has something looked wrong to you before you knew the reason? What helps you go and ask?
2. The eastern tribes feared their children would one day be told, "You have no portion in the LORD" (22:25). What do you most want the people who come after you to know they belong to? What are you doing to show them?
3. "To love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul" (22:5). Which of these five is hardest for you right now, and why?
