Joshua 14: Give me this hill country

Read Joshua 14:1-15 before you meet.

In a few lines

The dividing of the land opens with one man's request. At eighty-five, Caleb asked for the hill country where the spies had seen the Anakim forty-five years before, and was given Hebron. The chapter says three times, in three voices, that he followed the LORD wholly (14:8, 14:9, 14:14).

The verse to carry

“Nevertheless, my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed the LORD my God.”

Joshua 14:8

To talk about

  1. 1. Caleb held on to what the LORD had said for forty-five years (14:10). What promise of God are you waiting on, and what helps you keep hold of it?

  2. 2. Caleb asked for the very place that had frightened Israel (14:12). Is there a "hill country" in your life you'd rather avoid? What would it look like to face it trusting that the LORD may be with you?

  3. 3. "I brought him word again as it was in my heart" (14:7), while others made the people's heart melt (14:8). When has saying what you really believed been costly, and who has done that for you?
