John 6: The bread of life

Read John 6:1-71 before you meet.

In a few lines

In John's telling it is Jesus who first asks where bread could be bought, and John says, "He said this to test him" (6:5-6). And the ones who "went back and walked no more with him" were "many of his disciples" (6:66); when Jesus asked the twelve, Simon Peter answered, "Lord, to whom would we go?" (6:68).

The verse to carry

“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

John 6:35

To talk about

  1. 1. Andrew said of the boy's five barley loaves and two fish, "but what are these among so many?" (6:9). Where does what you have to bring feel too small for what's in front of you?

  2. 2. Jesus told those who came looking for him, "you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled" (6:26). What are the reasons you find yourself coming to Jesus?

  3. 3. Jesus asked the twelve, "You don’t also want to go away, do you?" (6:67). If he asked you today, what would your honest answer be, and why?
