John 5: My Father is still working

Read John 5:1-47 before you meet.

In a few lines

Asked "Do you want to be made well?", the man at the pool doesn't say yes; he says, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool" (5:6-7). Jesus doesn't put him in: "Arise, take up your mat, and walk" (5:8). And only after he walks does the Gospel say, "Now that day was a Sabbath" (5:9).

The verse to carry

“Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”

John 5:24

To talk about

  1. 1. The man said, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool" (5:7). Jesus said to him, "Arise, take up your mat, and walk" (5:8). What stands out to you in how Jesus answered him?

  2. 2. Jesus said, "he who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life" (5:24). What would it change in your week to take these words as said to you?

  3. 3. Jesus asked, "How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don’t seek the glory that comes from the only God?" (5:44). Where do you notice yourself looking for glory from other people?
