John 2: The beginning of his signs

Read John 2:1-25 before you meet.

In a few lines

At Cana, John tells of no word spoken over the water: Jesus tells the servants "Fill the water pots with water" and "Now draw some out", and the ruler of the feast "didn’t know where it came from", but the servants knew (2:7-9). And "When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered" his words about the temple (2:22).

The verse to carry

“This beginning of his signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.”

John 2:11

To talk about

  1. 1. His mother said to the servants, "Whatever he says to you, do it" (2:5). What makes it hard to do what Jesus says before you can see how it will turn out?

  2. 2. In the temple Jesus said, "Don’t make my Father’s house a marketplace!" (2:16). What do you think these words show about what mattered to him?

  3. 3. John says that when Jesus was raised from the dead, "his disciples remembered that he said this" (2:22). When have words of Jesus come back to you at a later time, and what brought them back?
