John 16: Sorrow turned into joy
Read John 16:1-33 before you meet.
In a few lines
"A little while" comes seven times in four verses (16:16-19), as some of his disciples ask one another what he means, and Jesus speaks of a woman giving birth and then says, "you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice" (16:22). In the Greek, the verb of "sorrow has filled your heart" (16:6) is the verb of "that your joy may be made full" (16:24).
The verse to carry
“I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
To talk about
1. "Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you" (16:22). What do these words say to you about sorrow and joy?
2. Jesus said, "you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me" (16:32). What does it mean to you that Jesus could say this?
3. "In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world" (16:33). Where do you most need to hear "cheer up" this week?
