John 13: The towel and the basin
Read John 13:1-38 before you meet.
In a few lines
Just before the towel and the basin, John's Gospel tells what Jesus knew: "that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God and was going to God" (13:3). Then he "arose from supper" (13:4) and began to wash the disciples' feet (13:5).
The verse to carry
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.”
John 13:34
To talk about
1. Peter first said, "You will never wash my feet!" (13:8), and then, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" (13:9). Between the two, Jesus said, "If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me" (13:8). What do you make of the change in Peter's answers?
2. "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (13:35). Where have you seen that kind of love among people who follow Jesus?
3. Peter asked, "Lord, why can’t I follow you now?" (13:37). What does following Jesus ask of you right now?
