Job 9: How can man be just with God?

Read Job 9:1-35 before you meet.

In a few lines

Job's "how can man be just with God?" (9:2) is asked in the words of a dispute: contend, answer, my judge, summon (9:3, 9:15, 9:19), and he wished for an "umpire" (9:33). When the LORD answers, he asks, "He who argues with God, let him answer it" (40:2), and in Hebrew argues is the very word Job used for umpire.

The verse to carry

“He does great things past finding out; yes, marvelous things without number.”

Job 9:10

To talk about

  1. 1. Job says of God, "Behold, he goes by me, and I don’t see him" (9:11), yet he goes on speaking about him and to him. When has God seemed hidden to you, and what kept you talking to him, or what made it hard?

  2. 2. Job said, "There is no umpire between us, that might lay his hand on us both" (9:33). When have you needed someone to stand between you and another person, and what did they do that helped?

  3. 3. Job said hard things here (9:22-24). At the end the LORD tells Eliphaz that Job had spoken of him "the thing that is right" (42:7), without saying which words he means. How do you want your group to treat honest, hard words from someone who is suffering?
