Job 6: Kindness from his friend

Read Job 6:1-30 before you meet.

In a few lines

Job never asked his friends for a present or to be redeemed (6:22-23). He says chesed, kindness, should be shown from a friend to one who is, in a Hebrew word found only here in the Hebrew Bible, ready to faint (6:14), and he asks, "Teach me, and I will hold my peace" (6:24).

The verse to carry

“To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.”

Job 6:14

To talk about

  1. 1. Job says, "To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend" (6:14). When you've been worn down, what did kindness from a friend actually look like?

  2. 2. Job pictures his friends as brooks that are gone when the caravans come looking for them (6:15-20). What makes it hard to stay with someone when their trouble goes on and on?

  3. 3. Job asks, "Teach me, and I will hold my peace" (6:24), and then, "your reproof, what does it reprove?" (6:25). What's the difference between words that help someone who is hurting and words that only correct them?
