Job 5: Happy is the man whom God corrects
Read Job 5:1-27 before you meet.
In a few lines
The line Paul quotes with "it is written" (1 Corinthians 3:19) is Eliphaz's (5:13), and Eliphaz is the friend the LORD speaks to in 42:7. His "happy is the man whom God corrects" (5:17) shares its Hebrew for do not despise, corrects and chastening with Proverbs 3:11-12, the saying Hebrews 12:5-6 gives to believers, while the LORD had already said Job was ruined "without cause" (2:3).
The verse to carry
“who does great things that can’t be fathomed, marvelous things without number;”
Job 5:9
To talk about
1. Eliphaz says, "Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects" (5:17), and Proverbs says much the same (Proverbs 3:11-12). But the book has told you Job was ruined "without cause" (2:3). How can you tell whether true words fit what someone is going through?
2. Eliphaz says God does "great things that can’t be fathomed" (5:9), and ends, "Behold, we have researched it. It is so" (5:27). How do you hold together what you're sure of about God and what you can't fathom?
3. "For he wounds and binds up" (5:18). When have you seen healing come after a hard season, and how would you speak of it to someone who is still in the middle of one?
