Job 41: Can you draw out Leviathan?

Read Job 41:1-34 before you meet.

In a few lines

In the middle of Leviathan, the LORD asks, "Who then is he who can stand before me?" (41:10), and "Who has first given to me, that I should repay him?" (41:11), where first given is one Hebrew verb, which Strong's gives as "precede". And the pride Leviathan is king over (41:34) is a word the Hebrew Bible uses only there and in 28:8.

The verse to carry

“Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine.”

Job 41:11

To talk about

  1. 1. "Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine" (41:11). Where are you tempted to feel that God owes you something, and what does this verse do to that feeling?

  2. 2. "Lay your hand on him. Remember the battle, and do so no more" (41:8). What in your life has shown you something you can't master or control? How did you respond?

  3. 3. "I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, nor his mighty strength, nor his goodly frame" (41:12). The LORD lingers over something he made. What in creation leaves you most in awe, and what does it tell you about God?
