Job 32: A spirit in man

Read Job 32:1-22 before you meet.

In a few lines

Elihu says "the Spirit of the Almighty gives them understanding" (32:8), and one chapter later "the breath of the Almighty gives me life" (33:4): in Hebrew the same two words. And before Elihu says a word, the book gives the reasons for his anger, against Job and against the three friends (32:2-3), without saying whether he was right.

The verse to carry

“But there is a spirit in man, and the Spirit of the Almighty gives them understanding.”

Job 32:8

To talk about

  1. 1. Elihu "had waited to speak to Job, because they were older than he" (32:4). When have you held back from saying something because of someone's age or standing, and what happened?

  2. 2. "It is not the great who are wise, nor the aged who understand justice" (32:9). Where have you found wisdom from someone you didn't expect it from?

  3. 3. "Please don’t let me respect any man’s person, neither will I give flattering titles to any man" (32:21). What makes it hard to speak honestly to someone without flattering them?
