Job 2: Skin for skin

Read Job 2:1-13 before you meet.

In a few lines

Job's wife asks, "Do you still maintain your integrity?" (2:9): in Hebrew, the same three words the LORD had used of Job, "He still maintains his integrity" (2:3). And the friends' first seven days with Job were silent: "no one spoke a word to him" (2:13).

The verse to carry

“But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job didn’t sin with his lips.”

Job 2:10

To talk about

  1. 1. Job's friends sat with him seven days and seven nights, "and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great" (2:13). When has someone's quiet company helped you more than anything they could have said?

  2. 2. Job asked, "Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?" (2:10). What makes that question hard to answer honestly for yourself?

  3. 3. The friends heard, "made an appointment together", and came "to sympathize with him and to comfort him" (2:11). Who near you is carrying something heavy, and what would it look like to go to them?
