Job 14: Hope for a tree
Read Job 14:1-22 before you meet.
In a few lines
Job gives hope to a cut-down tree (14:7) and then says to God, "So you destroy the hope of man" (14:19): the same Hebrew word. And the release he would wait for (14:14) stands beside warfare only here and in 10:17, a word Strong's derives from the verb of the tree that "will sprout again".
The verse to carry
“If a man dies, will he live again? I would wait all the days of my warfare, until my release should come.”
Job 14:14
To talk about
1. "Man, who is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble" (14:1). When has the shortness of life felt most real to you, and what did it change in how you live?
2. "For there is hope for a tree if it is cut down, that it will sprout again" (14:7). Where have you seen something grow back that you thought was finished?
3. "You would call, and I would answer you" (14:15). Job keeps speaking to God even while he asks hard questions. What helps you keep talking to God when he seems silent?
